How To Keep Up Your Vaginal Health Over The Summer

Blog

Over the duration of the summer months, some women may have a vaginal infection. There are many reasons for these infections, but during the summer, there are unique factors that can contribute to the infection occurring. Vaginal infections are not uncommon at all, so if you get one, don't be alarmed. However, there are a few things you can do to keep your vaginal health in top shape throughout the summer (and year-round) to minimize the risk of getting an infection.

Get Out of Your Wet Clothes ASAP

When moisture gets trapped around the vulva, there is an increased risk of yeast infections occurring. This moist environment creates the perfect breeding ground for the bacteria that causes these infections. So, when you go swimming, it is important to change out of your wet clothes as quickly as possible. The same is true after a really sweaty workout.

Wear Breathable, Moisture-Wicking Clothing

Depending on where you live in the country, the temperatures are probably scorching during the summer. Because of the temperatures being so high, you will likely sweat more than usual. Therefore, one of the best things that you can do for yourself is to wear clothes that will let your vagina breathe. It is also a good idea to wear moisture-wicking materials, which will help keep you a bit more comfortable and avoid moisture being trapped in places it doesn't need to be trapped.

Avoid Douching and Using Scented Products

One of the most important things anyone will tell you about vaginal health is that you should never douche. The bacteria in the vaginal environment need to remain balanced so that the vagina can stay healthy. Unfortunately, douches can eliminate healthy bacteria, throwing your environment down there off balance and increasing your risk of a vaginal infection. You will also want to avoid using products that have artificial scents, as these can cause irritation to the vaginal area, and this is the last thing that you want during the summer.

Consider Going Commando at Nighttime

If you are having vaginal irritation or have developed an infection, you may want to think about sleeping without your panties on. While breathable underwear is great, it can trap some moisture around the vulva at night. Since your vagina is naturally moist, you do not need excess moisture. If you do not want to go commando at nighttime, opt for cotton underwear.
