Questions To Ask Before You Choose A Birth Control Method

Blog

When it comes to birth control, you have more than a few options. Choosing the right one is important. Without a birth control method that fits your lifestyle and needs, you could make mistakes with your birth control that could have long-lasting consequences. To help you find the right birth control for you, here are a few questions to ask yourself.

Have You Used Birth Control in the Past?

Whether or not you have used birth control before is important. How well you responded to the treatment and whether or not it was effective can have bearing on the type of birth control you should use now.

Symptoms such as rapid weight gain and nausea can deter you from using some forms of control. Your OB/GYN needs to know if you experienced symptoms so that he or she can evaluate the effects and recommend an option.

If you have taken oral contraceptives in the past, knowing exactly which type you took is important. The pills have varying levels of estrogen and your tolerance levels for each can differ. If you have a poor reaction to one in the past, the OB/GYN can try a different one.

What Is Your Daily Schedule Like?

Regardless of the birth control method you choose, you have to be vigilant about actually using it. If your daily schedule is chaotic or you have trouble remembering to take it, using a birth control method that requires daily use would not be in your best interests. Therefore, it is important that you carefully consider your daily schedule and lifestyle before choosing a method.

For instance, if you are constantly on the go and worry about remembering to take a pill, the contraceptive injection or birth control patch might be the better option. The injection is taken every three months and the patch only needs to be changed every few weeks. Both still provide the protection needed from pregnancy without the need for daily remembrance.

If you have special circumstances that will prevent you from seeing your OB/GYN for the injections, the pills, sponge, and female condoms could be the better option. You can receive a year's supply of them and not have to worry about going to the doctor again until it is time for your annual.

Talk to your OB/GYN (such as one from Anchorage OB) to learn of other questions you should ask before choosing a birth control method. He or she can help you narrow your choices down so you can make an informed decision that is right for you.
